Intelligent Cognitive Tutors as Modeling Tool and Instructional Model
نویسنده
چکیده
Effective technologies for learning and doing mathematics should be based on sound cognitive theory, be empirically tested against alternatives, and be primarily addressed at mathematics as a modeling language. I will discuss the status and promise of researchbased "intelligent" systems that support students in mathematical modeling and tool use. Such systems are beginning to reshape the mathematics classroom, the way teachers teach, and what and how students learn.

Opening the Door to Non-programmers: Authoring Intelligent Tutor Behavior by Demonstration
Intelligent tutoring systems are quite difficult and time intensive to develop. In this paper, we describe a method and set of software tools that ease the process of cognitive task analysis and tutor development by allowing the author to demonstrate, instead of programming, the behavior of an intelligent tutor. We focus on the subset of our tools that allow authors to create “Pseudo Tutors” th...
متن کاملIntelligent tutors for all: Constraint-based modeling methodology, systems and authoring Contributing Authors
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) have revolutionized online education by providing individualized instruction tailored towards each student. Constraint-based tutors model instructional domains at an abstract level, a novel approach that simplifies the development of ITSs. We have developed many effective constraint-based tutors over the last decade in a number of instructional domains of vari...
متن کاملA Data Driven Approach to the Discovery of Better Cognitive Models
Cognitive models composed of knowledge components are an integral part of intelligent tutors and drive many of the instructional decisions that these systems make. Most of these models are designed by educators and subject experts. Today vast amounts of data, collected from many intelligent tutors, allow us to analyze and improve the current cognitive models through educational data mining. In ...
متن کاملEvaluating an Authoring Tool for Model-Tracing Intelligent Tutoring Systems
We have been creating an authoring tool, the Cognitive Model SDK, which allows non-cognitive scientists and non-programmers to produce a cognitive model for model-tracing tutors [1, 2]. The SDK is in use by developers at Carnegie Learning to produce their commercial Cognitive Tutors for math. However, it has never been evaluated with regards to the strong claim that noncognitive scientists and ...
متن کاملApplying Programming by Demonstration in an Intelligent Authoring Tool for Cognitive Tutors
We are building an intelligent authoring tool for Cognitive Tutors, a highly successful form of computer-based tutoring. The primary target users (the authors) are educators who are not familiar with cognitive task analysis and AI programming, which are essential tasks in building Cognitive Tutors. Instead of asking authors to write a cognitive model by hand, a Simulated Student embedded in the...
